IND vs SLC XI Test: Team India secure win by six wickets in warm-up game
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill struck useful runs at the top of the order before Mohammed Siraj's late blitz helped India beat Sri Lanka Cricket XI by six wickets in their three-day warm-up game here on Sunday. Chasing 207 for victory, India completed the target in 45 overs, finishing on 214 for four with Siraj smashing 32 off just 15 balls, including three successive sixes, to bring the game to an emphatic end. Jaiswal, who had fallen for a duck in India's first innings, responded in style with a quickfire 61 off 46 balls.
He and Gill put on exactly 105 for the opening wicket to give India a flying start to their chase. Jaiswal retired after reaching his half-century to allow his teammates valuable time in the middle. Gill, returning to action after missing the first two days of the fixture with a finger injury, made a useful 44 before being dismissed by spinner Keshara Nuwantha. His return to the middle was a significant positive for India ahead of the opening Test against Sri Lanka. Dhruv Jurel chipped in with 17, while Rishabh Pant made a patient 28 before India were briefly reduced to 155 for three. sport-newz.biz
But the target was never in serious danger, with the lower order completing the chase in the final session. Siraj then provided the fireworks, hitting three consecutive sixes to finish the game in style. Earlier, Sri Lanka Cricket XI declared their second innings at 200 for six in 45 overs, leaving India a target of 207. Opener Nishan Madushka, who had also scored a half-century in the first innings, top-scored with 63 off 73 balls, while Nipun Dhananjaya made 46 and Anjala Bandara contributed 35.
Ravindra Jadeja and Gurnoor Brar claimed two wickets each for India, while Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna took one apiece. India had earlier declared their first innings at 357 for six after Sri Lanka XI posted 363 for eight declared. Devdutt Padikkal was the star of India's first-innings effort with an unbeaten 142, while Jadeja scored 63 and Manav Suthar contributed 41. Gurnoor Brar remained unbeaten on 36 as India finished just six runs behind the hosts.
The warm-up game provided India with useful match practice ahead of the two-Test series against Sri Lanka, with the first match scheduled to begin in Galle on August 15. For India, the return of captain Gill to competitive action, Jaiswal's brisk second-innings fifty and Padikkal's century were among the major positives from the three-day fixture.

“Your medals inspire more than words”: PM Modi lauds CWG 2026 medallist
New Delhi [India], August 10 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday interacted with India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 medal winners at his residence and praised the athletes for their dedication, hard work and contribution towards bringing glory to the nation.
During the interaction, PM Modi said athletes have been among the most frequent visitors to his residence and appreciated their consistent efforts over the years to achieve success for India.
“I have been in this house for about 12 to 13 years now. If there is anyone I have received regularly and every single time, it is the athletes. Because of your hard work over the last 10 to 12 years, your constant efforts to bring victory to India, and the tradition of scaling new heights of success," PM Modi said in a video posted on his YouTube handle on Monday.
The Prime Minister highlighted the impact of athletes’ achievements in motivating young people to take up sports, saying their medals inspire more than just words.
“The impact we could try to make by going to schools and telling them ‘you should play,’ your medals inspire them far more than any words ever could," he added.
PM Modi also interacted with individual athletes during the meeting. Speaking to women’s shot put F57 gold medallist Sharmila Dhankar, he recalled her earlier promise that her two daughters would also become athletes.
“You promised me last time that your two daughters would become athletes," PM Modi said.
Responding to him, Sharmila said, “Yes, they are still young. In the next Commonwealth Games, we will show you three medals coming from one home."
The Prime Minister also shared a light moment with women’s discus throw bronze medallist Seema Kaliramna, who said she was nervous while meeting him.
“My heart is racing, sir," Seema told PM Modi.
“Don’t worry. You’re going to get a medal for your speech too!" PM Modi replied.
Seema later shared her excitement about meeting the Prime Minister and said her friends often asked her in Haryanvi if she would get an opportunity to meet him.
“My friends used to ask me, in Haryanvi, they’d say, ‘Have you met PM Modi that we should listen to you?’ Today, I have met you, sir, and now I can tell them, ‘Yes, I have met Modi-ji,'" she said.
PM Modi further stressed that building a sports culture was essential for India to achieve greater success at the international level.
“Sports infrastructure is one part of it, but a country wins medals when a ‘sports culture’ is built. Friends, you have done a great job and brought glory to the nation. I congratulate you all," he said.
Expressing confidence in their future performances, PM Modi said the athletes would continue to achieve success and hoped to meet them again after more victories.
“Believe me, you will be victorious in the future as well, and we will meet here once again. Thank you very much and best wishes," he said.
India ended its Commonwealth Games campaign in Glasgow with 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze, to finish fourth in the overall medal standings.

PM Modi Meets CWG Heroes

New Delhi, August 9: The cheers from Glasgow may have faded, but India’s Commonwealth Games heroes received another moment in the spotlight on Sunday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the country’s 2026 CWG medal winners at his official residence in New Delhi.
The meeting came days after India wrapped up its Commonwealth Games campaign with an impressive 39-medal haul — 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze — to finish fourth in the overall standings.
Modi interacted with the athletes, congratulating them for their determination and performances on the international stage. The Prime Minister later shared glimpses of the gathering, adding a sporting message that quickly became the highlight of the interaction: “Jo khelega, woh khilega.”
He also urged Indians to continue backing the country’s athletes with the message “Always cheer for Bharat.”

A 39-medal campaign to remember
India’s Glasgow campaign was built on a strong showing across several disciplines, but boxing emerged as the biggest headline-maker.
Indian boxers produced a record-breaking performance, collecting seven gold medals and three silver medals. It was India’s best-ever boxing gold haul at a Commonwealth Games, underlining the country’s growing strength in the ring.
The medal-winning performances, however, extended well beyond boxing.
Mirabai Chanu added another chapter to her extraordinary Commonwealth Games career by winning gold in the women’s 48kg weightlifting category. The victory gave her back-to-back CWG gold medals and her fourth overall Commonwealth Games medal.
Weightlifting also produced medals through athletes including Raja Muthupandi, Gyaneshwari Yadav, Rishikanta Singh Chanambam, Valluri Ajaya Babu and Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam. Ajaya Babu additionally etched his name into the record books with a Commonwealth Games record in the snatch.
Athletics and para-athletics added further sparkle. Sarvesh Kushare won silver in the men’s high jump, while Sharmila created history by winning gold in the women’s F57 shot put — ending India’s two-decade wait for a Commonwealth Games para-athletics gold.
From medals to motivation
The Delhi meeting was more than a ceremonial reception. It offered a chance for the athletes who carried India’s hopes in Glasgow to share the moment with the Prime Minister after a campaign that placed the country fourth on the medal table.
And Modi’s simple sporting line captured the mood of the gathering.
“Jo khelega, woh khilega.”
For India’s CWG heroes, the message was fitting: the medals may have been won in Glasgow, but the applause continued at home.

Bad news for Shubman Gill’s Team India ahead of 1st Test vs Sri Lanka in Galle, star player may be…
India vs Sri Lanka 2026 1st Test: Shubman Gill’s Team India will begin a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka in Galle on Saturday. The visitors warmed up in style for the first Test with a six-wicket win over Sri Lanka Cricket XI in a three-day warm-up match at the Nondescripts Cricket Club (NCC) ground in Colombo. But there are some injury concerns for Gill’s side ahead of the first Test.
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav is the lead specialist spinner selected by the Indian selectors for the series against Sri Lanka. The 31-year-old left-arm wrist spinner has claimed 79 wickets in 18 Tests at an average of 22.35 with 5 five-wicket hauls to his name.
But after claiming 2 for 76 in the first innings of SLC XI in 18 overs on the opening day, Kuldeep didn’t bowl a single over in the second innings on Sunday. But Team India spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule clarified that there were no injury concerns over Kuldeep Yadav and the chinaman bowler was on ‘assessing his body’.
“Kuldeep bowled almost 20 overs in the sense 18 in the match and about two-three overs before the game also. He had a very good outing and he just wanted to take a break in terms of just understanding how his body is at,” Bahutule said at the end of warm-up match in Colombo on Sunday.
Apart from Kuldeep Yadav, the Indian squad have a couple of left-arm spinners in all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Manav Suthar and a off-spinner in Saransh Jain. But apart from Jadeja, other spinners have very little experience in the longest format of the game.
“Manav bowled about 14-15 overs, Jaddu bowled about 14-15 overs. So, they got a very good outing, they understood how the pitch reacts and I think it was a great prep for them,” he said.
#1 All-rounder for a reason.
Ravindra Jadeja can bat, bowl, field, and apparently, crack Gautam Gambhir too.

Former India leg-spinner Bahutule said that the surface at NCC in Colombo started to offer turn as the match progressed. “The bowlers had a great opportunity to go down and express themselves on a pitch which was slightly on a flatter side in the first day. But as the days went by, there was more turn on to it and definitely a good outing for the spinners,” Bahutule said.
Team India were satisfied with the outcome of the warm-up game as they wanted to get accustomed to conditions in Sri Lanka.
“Most of the guys have come here, experienced guys, Jaddu has already played here. But the new guys like Manav and a few others, Saransh Jain, they need to just adapt to what will be the ideal lines, what will be the ideal lengths and obviously the field sets, which is very much important,” Bahutule felt.
Shubman Gill is absolutely fine: Sairaj Bahutule
Team India captain Shubman Gill chose not to bat in the first innings of the warm-up match after getting hit on the hand in a practice session ahead of the game. But Bahutule revealed that resting Gill was just a ‘precaution’.
“It was just a precaution more than anything else. And he has been absolutely fine. He has been doing his training. And the management decided that we could just take that precaution of not putting him into that first day,” Bahutule said.
“Shubman takes his preparation very seriously. And he is a very meticulous boy. And he understands that whatever is the demand for that particular series with the attack, which has been successful for the Sri Lankan team. His preparation is done accordingly,” he added, praising Gill.
The Indian captain came out to bat in the second innings, chasing 207 to win, and scored 44 off 54 balls to lead the chase in a six-wicket win.
