Khoukhi’s stoppage-time goal snatches draw against Switzerland as Qatar earn first-ever World Cup point

DOHA: Boualem Khoukhi headed home in the fourth minute of stoppage time as Qatar held Group B favourites Switzerland to a 1-1 draw and secured their first-ever World Cup point in Santa Clara on Saturday.

Murat Yakin’s side dominated the match and took the lead after Breel Embolo converted a penalty in the 17th minute in front of 67,966 spectators at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.

Qatar survived a barrage of Swiss attacks across both halves before Khoukhi's late header salvaged a point. It was only Qatar's second goal at a World Cup after Mohammed Muntari scored against Senegal four years ago.

Making only his seventh appearance for Qatar, goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada emerged as the star, blocking multiple Swiss attempts. He enjoyed a memorable match apart from the penalty he conceded.

“I am happy to help Qatar, but everyone gave their best. Now we will focus on our next matches as all the matches will be difficult. We are confident of doing our best,” Abunada said after the match.

The two-time Asian champions will now meet co-hosts Canada in Vancouver on June 19 (1am Qatar time) in their second match before facing Bosnia and Herzegovina in their final group game in Seattle on June 24. Canada and Bosnia also played a 1-1 draw on Friday.

Julen Lopetegui, managing his first-ever match at a World Cup, continued to show faith in Abunada by handing him a starting role ahead of seasoned Meshaal Barsham.

With Almoez Ali starting on the bench, Akram Afif led the line, supported by Edmilson Junior and Yousef Abdurisag, while Assim Madibo anchored a midfield that also featured Issa Laye and Jassem Jabir.

Afif, however, had a quiet evening as Switzerland dominated, registering 26 attempts, including seven shots on target.

They threatened moments after kick-off through Embolo, but Qatar created the first clear opening in the second minute.

Edmilson dispossessed Manuel Akanji and raced through on goal, only to fire straight at Gregor Kobel from close range.

It was an open start, with Dan Ndoye testing Abunada after Michel Aebischer's pass. Abunada produced a smart low save to deny Aebischer in the sixth minute.

Qatar survived another scare four minutes later when Ndoye scooped his effort over the bar. Abunada then came to the rescue again following a Swiss free-kick before conceding a penalty after fouling Remo Freuler.

After a VAR review confirmed the decision, Embolo calmly sent Abunada the wrong way, slotting into the left corner to give Switzerland an early lead.

Abunada remained busy, denying Denis Zakaria after Embolo's lay-off before the hydration break. At the other end, Laye headed over from Afif's short-corner routine, but Switzerland maintained the upper hand as Qatar's lack of precision in possession allowed the Swiss to dominate the ball.

Edmilson came close to equalising three minutes before the break, but Kobel blocked his low effort with his legs after a through ball into the box.

Abunada then produced two more excellent saves, first to deny Ndoye from another Aebischer assist and then to keep out Ruben Vargas as Switzerland pushed for a second in added time.

Qatar escaped once more just before the interval when Homam Al Amin blocked a goal-bound effort from Aebischer with Abunada out of position, capping a dominant first half from Switzerland.

Switzerland resumed where they had left off, winning three successive corners as they pinned Qatar back inside their own half.

Granit Xhaka then came close with a powerful effort from distance that sailed just over the bar as the Swiss pressed for a second goal.

Yakin's side maintained sustained pressure, leaving Al Annabi struggling to gain a foothold in the contest.

Seeking to change the momentum, Lopetegui made a triple substitution on the hour mark, introducing Karim Boudiaf for Jabir, Ahmed Fathi for Ayoub Alawi and Ahmed Alaaeldin in place of Abdurisag.

Six minutes later, Yakin freshened up his side with a double substitution, sending on Fabian Rieder for Aebischer and Johan Manzambi in place of Ndoye.

Alaaeldin injected some urgency into Qatar's attack with a lively run into the box before Boudiaf tried his luck from distance as Al Annabi showed signs of improvement after the hydration break.

But Switzerland soon shifted back into top gear, with Abunada once again coming to Qatar's rescue by denying Rieder before Manzambi flashed an effort just wide of the left post from distance.

Hassan Al Haydos replaced Edmilson Junior with two minutes remaining.

Afif produced his rare bright moment of the match and set up Alaaeldin, who fired straight at the goalkeeper.

Just when Qatar appeared headed for defeat, Khoukhi rose highest to meet Homam Al Amin's precise cross and headed into the right corner to seal a point.

Qatar will now aim for a first-ever World Cup victory when they meet Canada.

Egypt FA Plans ‘Dual National Recruitment Committee’

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) plans to create a committee to coordinate the recruitment of players holding dual nationality.

The proposed body would oversee cases across every national-team age group. The EFA is reportedly considering former players for places on the committee.

Members would compile a database of Egyptian players based abroad. They would also track eligible prospects in foreign academies and senior leagues.

The committee would contact players and their families to determine their interest in representing Egypt. It would then help them complete the required eligibility documents.

This approach would give the EFA a unified recruitment policy. It would also prevent different national team staff from handling cases separately.

The EFA previously established a Committee for Egyptian Players Abroad in July 2025, chaired by EFA president Hany Abo Rida, which included board members and technical officials.

Abo Rida previously addressed the federation’s dual-national scouting programme in January. He said officials wanted to identify eligible players for Egypt’s teams at different age levels.

He also acknowledged shortcomings in the process and said the project needed time to produce results. The latest proposal appears to expand and standardise that work.

Haissem Hassan’s integration into the senior team has added momentum to the project. The Real Oviedo winger represented Egypt at the 2026 World Cup after the EFA completed his eligibility process.

Scouts are said to have since prepared a report on eight more dual-national players. The list reportedly includes Liverpool prospect Kareem Ahmed, Hertha Berlin’s Selim Taleb, and Hamburg defender Omar Abdelmeguid.

The federation has already introduced several overseas prospects to Egypt’s youth teams. Kareem Ahmed, Cam’ron Ismail, and Radwan Hamzawi previously joined the U20 setup through that recruitment drive.

The immediate next step for the EFA now will be to determine the committee’s exact authority. It must also define how the panel will work with coaches when assessing and approaching eligible players.

Master and apprentice as Spain, Argentina coaches meet in final

East Rutherford: Master will take on apprentice when Spain coach Luis de la Fuente lines up against his former student, Argentina’s Lionel Scaloni, in the World Cup final on Sunday.

Nine years ago, Scaloni was just another former professional player pursuing a career in coaching, studying for his pro license at the Spanish football federation’s training center in Las Rozas, on the outskirts of Madrid.

His teacher on the course? De la Fuente.

In the years since, both men have gone on to forge successful coaching careers in international football.

Scaloni, 48, took charge of Argentina in August 2018, initially on an interim basis -- less than a year after taking coaching lessons in de la Fuente’s classroom.

Since then the former Deportivo La Coruna player has led Argentina into a golden age of tournament success.

He ended their 28-year wait for a major title with victory at the 2021 Copa America and then followed that up with the ultimate prize -- the 2022 World Cup. Another Copa America title was added in 2024.

Over a similar period, de la Fuente has overseen a resurgence in Spanish football fortunes that has left La Roja on course for a second World Cup win, to set alongside their triumph in 2010.

Appointed in December 2022 after Spain’s insipid last-16 exit to Morocco at the last World Cup, de la Fuente, 65, has returned Spain to the top table of international football.

A thrilling victory at the 2024 European Championship was backed up by a run to the final of the UEFA Nations League last year.

Tuesday’s semi-final masterclass against France has left de la Fuente on the brink of topping those successes with a World Cup win.

“He was my mentor, and he taught me everything I know and now we are facing each other in a final,” Scaloni said of de la Fuente following Wednesday’s epic 2-1 semi-final defeat of England.

“I remember after Qatar when we had a conference among coaches, and I had a chat with him for quite a while. He’s done brilliant work with his team, I’m very pleased for him.” Scaloni has strong personal and professional ties to Spain after spending the bulk of his playing career there. His wife, Elisa Montero, is Spanish, and the couple live with their two sons in Mallorca.

On Sunday, though, despite his warm relationship with de la Fuente, Scaloni has no doubt where his loyalties lie.

“Of course everyone knows I live in Spain and have Spanish family. I’m very, very sorry, but I’m going to try to beat Mr de la Fuente."

De la Fuente has reciprocated, describing Scaloni as a model student.

“I have great respect for Lionel,” he said. “He has won everything with the Argentina national team. I agree with many of his ideas, I admire him professionally and personally. He is a great person.

“Lionel was a very diligent student, with a great attitude and interest. He had the touch of someone who is determined to grow. Being his teacher is an honour."
